Chapter 9 (GOP)

After taking leave of her new friend, Kristen took purposeful, drunken steps down the sidewalk towards Mickey’s Coffee Shop. She realized she should have worn a warmer shirt under her coat, and she began to shiver. She wished she had the bourbon back, but the old man was waltzing off with it, who knew where.

As the wide plate-glass windows of the coffee shop drew nearer, she slowed her pace, feeling almost frantic. She was suddenly afraid that Melody wouldn’t be there. Maybe she’d changed her mind. Maybe she’d realized it was a mistake.

But then she looked through the window and caught sight of Melody. She was sitting there at the counter, her hands wrapped around a coffee mug. She kept glancing nervously towards the door.

Kristen realized that she was looking for her. Her heart swelled, and even in her state of intoxication, she had a moment of crystal clarity.

There was something about that woman. Something about Melody. Kristen’s heartbeat was arrested – and she found it hard to breathe.

For the briefest moment, she wanted to run away. She remembered Ava’s words.

The cold look of hatred in her eyes.

No one can give you what you’re looking for. You’re a fairy tale princess lost in a crack house.

Kristen stared at Melody through the smudged coffee-shop window. She still wanted to run. She feared the pain that would almost inevitably come.

But she couldn’t run away from this woman. She just wanted to be near her.

Taking a deep, shaking breath, she stepped forward to open the shop door. She went inside, blinking tipsily in the bright light.

As if by some strange instinct, Melody’s head swiveled directly towards Kristen. She smiled anxiously, tight fingers circled around her mug.

Kristen felt like a deer trapped in headlights. She looked back towards the door, but she knew she couldn’t run.

So she looked at Melody. She was so beautiful. And she was just staring at her – with such a goddamn trusting expression.

She made a beeline towards the counter where Melody was sitting. The other woman looked at her with wide eyes. Their gazes locked, and Kristen’s knees buckled. She hadn’t felt this in so long.

“Hey, Mel,” she muttered.

Goddamn it. She’d shortened her name again.

“Hey, Kristen,” Melody said quietly. “I’ve been looking forward to seeing you again.”

“Me, too,” Kristen replied. She sat down on the stool next to the other woman, looking straight into her eyes.

She was so beautiful. Hey eyes were so perfectly green, and her face was so plainly honest.

It made Kristen feel like a criminal.

“You know, Mel,” she murmured, “it really is good to see you.”

“Why do you call me Mel?” the other woman asked softly.

“You don’t like it?” Kristen inquired nervously.

“On the contrary,” Melody murmured. “I like it a lot.”

Kristen just sat there with her mouth halfway open, staring at Melody. She wanted to say something – anything – but she didn’t know what it should be.

“Kristen,” Melody said in that same quiet voice.

“Hmmm?” Kristen mumbled, still staring into her eyes.

“Have you been drinking?”

Kristen didn’t miss a beat.
